As 2026 approaches, we are excited to share some wonderful news about the next chapter for Cashman Veterinary.

Bill and his daughter, Gene, have chosen to partner with Village Vets, a respected Irish, family-run veterinary group that shares their values of compassionate, community-focused care.

After a career spanning more years than he’d like to count, Bill is stepping back from daily practice to enjoy some well-earned time with his family. Before we look ahead, we’d like to take a moment to celebrate Bill’s many years of dedication and the lasting impact he has had on Cashman Veterinary.

A native of Glanmire, Bill Cashman qualified as a vet long before mobile phones or Google existed. (Rumours that his first patient was a Diplodocus are greatly exaggerated, more likely a rather large Dodo!)

After five years abroad in Kildare, Dungarvan, and Carrigaline, Bill returned home in 1983 to become a partner in Cashman & O’Driscoll. When P.J. O’Driscoll retired in 2019, Bill became the elder lemon of the newly named Cashman Veterinary Hospital, just as the Covid-19 pandemic arrived.

In 2019, Bill was joined by his daughter, Gene, who brought with her valuable experience from practising veterinary medicine across Australia, New Zealand and Canada.

Throughout his career, Bill has been driven by a lifelong fascination with what makes animals tick (or not, as the case may be). His dedication has extended beyond the clinic, from pioneering the development of Veterinary Nursing at Douglas Street College (formerly St. John’s College of Further Education and Training) to serving on the Irish Veterinary Council, including a term as its President.

As Bill steps into this new chapter, he paves the way for an exciting future through the partnership with Village Vets.

Village Vets is a family-run Irish veterinary group that started in Co. Meath in 1980, founded by Karl Cosgrave. Today, the group is owned and led by his son, Charles, who is also a vet. Under his leadership, Village Vets has expanded while staying true to its core principle: personalised, high-quality care delivered by local teams who know their clients and their communities.

Joining Village Vets brings exciting new benefits for both our clients and patients. Over the coming months, we will be introducing new technology, including plans for a state-of-the-art dental theatre, upgraded laboratory equipment and a new computer system designed to make your experience smoother and more efficient.

We are delighted to announce that Gene will continue as Partner and Clinical Director at both Glanmire and Cobh clinics. She will continue to provide her high standard of veterinary care, alongside offering acupuncture and osteopathy, as well as all aspects of routine veterinary medicine.

As the clinic enters this exciting new era, our name will evolve to reflect the partnership:

Our dedicated team remains the same, familiar faces who know and care for your pets, and we look forward to continuing to serve our community with the same warmth, expertise and compassion that have always been at the heart of Cashman Veterinary.

We are truly excited for this new adventure and the opportunities it brings for our clients, our team and your pets.
